Pope John Paul II often spoke of the new evangelisation, but what exactly did he mean and, more to the point, is it anything to do with us? According to Mgr Keith Barltrop, it is. Many of us recognise that evangelisation is something we are required to do as Catholics. But the point of doing it remains hazy. The reason God calls us to evangelise is that He wants the Catholic faith to be shared with everyone. The ultimate purpose of evangelisation is "the conversion of England". That phrase is unpopular these days because of its negative historical associations. But it describes our aim perfectly.
