News - Newsletters
Written by Parish Office
Friday, 05 March 2010

LENT TALKS:
The Second talk, by Deacon Vincent, will be Tuesday 9th March.  The topic is ‘The Arrest, Trial and Crucifixion of Jesus in St Luke’s Gospel”.  The third talk, by Fr. Kevin, is on Tuesday 23rd March on ‘The Burial & Resurrection as described by St Luke”. This is a good opportunity to reflect upon the events of Holy Week and will help deepen our understanding of the special services during that week.

ERMINA FERDENZI RIP:
Reception: Monday 8th March at 8 pm.  The Requiem follows on Tuesday 9th at 10 am.

CONFIRMATION COURSE:
Next session is on Wednesday 10th  March at 7 pm.

EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITY OF PRIESTHOOD:
If you are a man and single, there is a possibility that God may be asking you to be a Priest.  Please see the notice in the porch giving details of a day at Ealing Abbey on the 13th March.

LENT BEGINS ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17th  WITH ASH WEDNESDAY

Lent was originally the season of preparation for Easter.  The traditional ways of preparation were fasting, praying and almsgiving.  Prayer gives time to God, fasting diminishes selfishness and almsgiving helps others.

Jesus spent forty days in the desert preparing for his work, whilst the Israelites spent forty years in the desert preparing for the Promised Land.

We spend forty days of Lent preparing to celebrate the great events of our faith: the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Christ.

ASH WEDNESDAY MASS TIMES:

8 am, 10 am and 7.30 pm.

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS AS TO HOW WE MIGHT PREPARE OURSELVES FOR EASTER

Faith and Superstition
Ask the Theologian - Ask the Theologian
Written by John McDade SJ
Tuesday, 02 February 2010

What is the difference between faith and superstition? Question asked by Kate.

Faith is a movement of the heart towards God.  It is brought about by God’s presence in us and is a gift that fulfils our nature.  There are ways in which this capacity in us to trust in goodness can be distorted: we can believe lying politicians and place our hopes in what they offer, even to the point of not seeing the moral evil that impels them.  (Hitler and Stalin would be prime examples.)  The result is a kind of parody of religion that people sometimes call ‘political religion’, which mimics good religion by triggering the same kinds of movements within the person that grace does.

Paul tells us that God cared for Moses and the people who were delivered from slavery, but they were expected to remain faithful to God.
